The XXV Winter Olympiad will officially come to an end with the Closing Ceremony. Held in the Verona Olympic Arena, an ancient Roman amphitheatre, the ceremony will feature Italian artists as well as American DJ Diplo (sure, why not). Athletes will again parade into the stadium, this time not as individual country delegations but as a single group. (This now regular part of Olympic Closing Ceremonies was actually the idea of an Australian teenager at the 1956 Melbourne Games.) As the Milan athletes say their farewells, the Winter Olympic flag will officially be handed off to the French Alps and the flame will be extinguished.

Unsurprisingly all-time Winter Olympics leader Norway is safely out in front again, and they’ve already broken their own record of most Golds at one Games with their 17th on Friday. By the time you’re reading this, they’ve probably won their 18th in the Men’s Cross Country Skiing 50km Mass Start, where Norwegian GOAT Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo is trying to go 6-for-6 and sweep the Cross Country events.

Below the lofty heights of Valhalla, Italy will try to reclaim second place and several countries are having their best Games ever. Team USA already tied their most golds, and has a shot at breaking their national record 37. Lucas Pinheiro Braathen’s Gold in the Men’s Downhill was not only Brazil’s first medal, it was the first for the entire continent of South America. Japan, France, Switzerland, and Australia have all set high-water marks, and Spain and Great Britain each won two medals on the same day for the first time. Enjoy this final weekend of the Olympics.

The roots of the Olympic Village go back to the ancient Greek Olympics, but the first modern one didn’t appear until Paris 1924. The Villages grew and evolved over time, first including women at Melbourne 1956, but segregating them until LA 1984. Amenities were also added over time, often reflecting local culture. Innsbruck 1976 had a discotheque and casino, Atlanta 1996 added laser tag, and Nagano 1998 had a sticker photo booth that was especially popular with athletes. Milan Cortina 2026 has four Olympic Villages to accommodate the spread out venues, but unfortunately the Biathletes don’t get to live in any of them.

After the Games early Olympic Villages were often torn down, but most were turned into housing or university dorms. Some had grimmer afterlives. The Berlin 1936 Village became a Nazi hospital then Soviet army base, while the Lake Placid 1980 facility was converted into a federal prison. This year’s Olympic Village will follow the more traditional path of student housing, if they can ever evict Team USA.

Ski Mountaineering is probably as old as skiing. Before the advent of ski lifts in the 1930s (roughly 8000 years after the advent of skis) skinning was the only way up a hill in order to ski down it. In the 19th century, Italy equipped those skiers with guns and created the world’s first alpine infantry corps, the Alpini. At the 1924 Winter Games in Chamonix the sport of Military Patrol - a sort of Skimo/Biathlon combo - made it’s only Olympic appearance, and eventually Biathlon became a regular Winter Olympics sport in 1960.

Ski Mountaineering took longer to get going, but by the 1980s it was an established sport in Europe, and the first governing body was organized in the mid-90s. Today there are continental championships in Europe, Asia, and North and South America. Even with the growth Skimo’s place in future Olympics is not guaranteed , so don’t miss it this week. (And if you want to sound smart while watching with friends, pay close attention to the transitions when they take the skins on and off - that’s where the race can be won or lost.)

All of this begs the question, is there such a thing as Olympic Home Field Advantage? Athletes and coaches will tell you it’s real. They point to the huge fan support, the proximity to home, and especially the familiarity with the facilities. Academics will tell you it’s more complicated. While host countries often outperform, they also usually have more athletes. Host countries are also wealthy. Hosting the Games isn’t cheap, and when controlling for socioeconomic factors like GDP, there’s no actual home advantage.

However, there is one Olympics where the home field advantage is beyond a doubt though, Melbourne 1956. The first Games in the Southern Hemisphere created unique circumstances for the green and gold team. The games were held in northern winter, the distance made travel strenuous, and Cold War geopolitics caused several countries to boycott. The Czech and Soviet teams endured a month-long journey home via boat and train - not your ideal Olympic recovery. Now with less than a week to go of Milan Cortina 2026, and Italy currently 2nd on the medal table and eyeing their highest potential finish ever, whether Olympic Home Field Advantage is real or not probably doesn’t matter to the Italians.

Certainly the most scandalously named controversy - Penisgate - has been in Men’s Ski Jumping, where athletes have been accused of injecting their ‘equipment’ with acid in order to fly further. This is apparently a real enough thing that no less than Scientific American broke down the physics of the scandal. Other athletes have been involved in cheating outside the field of play - from a conviction for robbing a teammate to publicly airing their infidelity.

And of course it wouldn’t truly be the Winter Olympics without a Figure Skating scandal. Americans Madison Chock and Evan Bates won the Silver medal in Ice Dancing after a shock low score from the (surprise!) French judge. Officials defended the score, and Team USA chose not to appeal. This has once again ignited calls for reform, with US Figure Skating has said it will ask for the scoring system to be reviewed and even moving toward AI judging. I can’t wait for the robot judge scandal in 2030!

They are far from the only parents though. Winter Olympics athletes skew older than those in the Summer Games, so it’s no surprise that there are many parents competing. But only one Olympic parent is competing alongside their Olympic nepo baby in these Olympics. Mexican Ski Racer Sarah Schleper, appearing in her 7th Games, finished 26th in the Super-G last week. Her son Lasse Gaxiola is making his first Olympic appearance. He races in the Men’s Slalom today.

Of course there are also the iconic American Ice Dancers Madison Chock and Evan Bates. Skating partners for 15 years, the pair began dating in 2016 and got married in 2024. The capped their four-Olympics career, which included receiving a Gold Medal at the Paris 2024 Summer Games, with another Gold and a Silver Medal in Milan.

Friday the 13th brings its own superstitions to the Games, of course. The day’s unlucky origins come from Norse mythology, so maybe the all-time Winter Olympic greats will have an off day. This day has fallen during the Olympics before, and not without notice. The Athens 2004 Olympics are the only Games to open on Friday the 13th. The cauldron was lit that night by a late substitution after the original picks were implicated in a doping scandal.

And it could only have been a Friday the 13th at the Nagano Olympics in 1998 when German Alpine Skier had a major crash that looked life-threatening in the Men’s Downhill, but remarkably walked away and won double Gold in the Super G and Giant Slalom later that week! (It’s also crazy how old that footage looks and it was only 1998.)

Contrast that with the rest of the world, where nearly every country has a sports ministry. In Europe nearly 80% of countries provide direct support to their athletes. France alone spends $300 million on for a population one-fifth the size of the US.

Now for the first time American athletes going to get paid, sort of. Thanks to a $100 million gift from a billionaire (the American way!) every member of Team USA will get $200,000 - with a lot of strings attached. So it should come as no surprise that many athletes have day jobs. From lawyer to pharmacist to cellist, and that’s just the curling team. Elsewhere there’s an engineer, a landscape architect, and several soldiers. If any of them should win Gold, they’ll also get $37,500 in prize money. Not bad, but it’s nothing compared to Poland, where you’ll get $200k, a car, an apartment, and a free vacation to go with your new hardware.

It is also the only male-only sport in the Olympics. Perhaps this should not be surprising despite all the talk of gender parity. After all, Women’s Ski Jumping was only introduced in 2014, and the former heard of the International Ski Federation said - in 2005! - that jumping “seems not to be [medically] appropriate for ladies." So you’ll have to excuse athlete like Annika Malacinski, who trains alongside her Olympian brother Niklas, for being furious at the IOC.

To make matters worse, that same International Olympic Committee is threatening to drop Nordic Combined from the Games altogether, citing lack of participation and audience. I bet letting women compete could really help solve both those problems. I wonder why they never thought of that?

And then the medals started breaking - literally and in the news. As medalists donned their trophies and jumped for joy, their medals began snapping off their ribbons. Word quickly spread, “Don’t jump in them.” That’s right, the loftiest symbol of athletic achievement is too fragile to wear while celebrating that achievement.

Fortunately, the problem is not going unaddressed. An unnamed source (for real!) says the culprit may be the legally-mandated breakaway cords - safety features that prevent someone from becoming tangled and choking on a necklace. Regardless of the cause, officials are taking the issue seriously. No less than Andrea Francisi, the chief games operations officer for the Milan Cortina Organizing Committee, said “obviously we are paying maximum attention to this matter…, because we really consider it to be the most important moment.”

Team USA athletes like Mikaela Shiffrin, Erin Jackson, and Chloe Kim are household names not just because they are champions - they used social media to keep themselves in the conversation long after the last Olympics ended. Now a new generation is taking up the mantle - athletes like Ice Hockey player Hilary Knight, Curler Ben Richardson, and Luger Sophia Kirby are sharing their Olympic experience and building personal brands and followings beyond Milan 2026.

Then there are those elite few who are influencers in their own right, and also happen to be Olympic medalists. American-born Freestyle Skier Eileen Gu won Gold in Beijing for her mother’s native China, the country she chose to represent in part to capitalize on a 1.4 billion-strong market. Gu has over 10 million followers and reportedly made $23 million last year from endorsements alone. Combining talents with another athlete-influencer, Dutch Speed Skater and model Jutta Leerdam is half of an influencing power couple with fiance Jake Paul. Together they have over 30 million followers and have caused quite an Olympic stir.

But whether an athlete has 2 followers or 2 million, they all put their skis on one boot at a time.

NBC will air the Olympics from 7am to 12:45pm, switch over to 10 hours of Super Bowl coverage from LA, then immediately go back to the Olympics until after midnight. Sunday will also mark the 2026 debut of uber-sportscaster and frequent flier Mike Tirico. At 6pm he’ll become just the 13th person to call a Super Bowl, then after the game ends at 10:45pm he’ll anchor for 2 hours of Primetime Olympics coverage from LA. When he goes off the air at 12:35am Monday morning Tirico will jet off to Milan where he will lead daily primetime coverage starting Tuesday.

Today will bring 8 Gold Medals, 1 Lombardi Trophy, several Olympic legends, a very tired Mike Tirico, and probably more than a few painful Super Bowl-Olympics dad jokes. Enjoy the quadrennial tradition!

• American Lindsey Vonn looks to shake off a recent injury and 6-year retirement to on a Women’s Downhill Skiing course she has won at 12 times.

• Norwegian Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo is the reigning world champion in all six Cross-Country Skiing disciplines and already has five Gold Medals at home.

• Czechian Ester Ledecka’s list of achievements is astounding - she is the first person to both Ski and Snowboard in the Winter Olympics, which she did at the same Games, and she’s won Gold on both, also at the same Games.

And then there are those nations whose hopes rest on a single pair of shoulders - the 15 athletes who are the sole member of their team. Many are not a surprise - tiny, flat, or tropical countries with little snow and ice like Monaco, Kenya, Malaysia, and Pakistan. These countries, like most one-athlete teams, sent a single skier.

The one-woman team you probably weren’t expecting, though, is Puerto Rico. Of course, Puerto Rico is part of the United States, but not at the Games. The IOC considers some territories (also including Hong Kong) independent Olympic nations, and Puerto Rico has a proud Olympic tradition dating back to 1948 and including 12 medals. This winter it is two-time Olympian Kellie Delka carrying the island’s flag and its dreams of a first Winter Olympics medal. Oh, and Kellie isn’t a skier. She competes in the insane sport of skeleton.

Opening Ceremony producer Marco Balich describes the show as a celebration of harmony and duality: “Milan and Cortina, city and mountain, the harmony between man and nature, between cultures, people and different ways of thinking.” That duality will be on display as two Olympic cauldrons are lit and two Olympic flags are raised in simultaneous Ceremonies in Milan and Cortina. But they aren’t stopping there! Rather than have all the athletes gather in one (or two places) for the Parade of Nations, they will now have four smaller parades where the athletes are living and competing. (Team USA walks 90th of 92.)

Lucky for us, we can enjoy Andrea Bocelli, Mariah Carey, Sabrina Impacciatore, both ceremonies, and all four parades from the warmth of our couch.

What To Watch Today

My goal each day is to present a full event schedule as cleanly and simply as possible, while also highlighting medal events (🥇), Team USA (🇺🇸), and GOAT athletes (🐐). Everything airs live on Peacock and the NBC Sports app, so I am listing live times in the Eastern time zone for all you night owls. Full event replays are available streaming for every session as well.

NBC will air a nightly “Primetime in Milan” package every day from 8 p.m.–11 p.m. (except Super Bowl Sunday, more on that Sunday). This coverage will include the best events as well as news and human interest stories. But because of the time zone difference, nothing will be live in that block.

Like every Olympic Games, this year’s edition will be the largest and most gender equal yet. Nearly 3,000 athletes - 47% of them female - from 92 countries will compete for 116 Gold Medals, and Ski Mountaineering makes its Olympic debut. (We’ll have much more on this new sport when it starts later in the games.)

All of those athletes and sports will be broadcast by NBC in the United States. There will be over 3,200 hours of live broadcasts across a dizzying array of networks and platforms, maybe even including your local multiplex. (Just don’t expect to read about the Games in the Washington Post.)

So now it’s time to (perhaps metaphorically) strap on our skis, lace up our skates, sharpen our blades, finish our 25 Olympic venues, and prepare for the literal largest Winter Olympics in history.

Athletes start the race by climbing the mountain on their skis, including sections of cross-country skiing, then ski back down the un-groomed mountainside. These games will also bring the return of American skier Lindsay Vonn, competing in her fifth Olympic Games and first since 2018.

A large part of the Closing Ceremony was devoted on Paris handing off to LA. With the United States hosting the World Cup in 2026, it’s going to be an exciting few years for sports in America. But LA28 is not the next Olympics, Milan Cortina 2026 is just 544 days away.

The cities of Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo will host Italy’s third Winter Games (and fourth overall) 20 years after Turino 2006 and 70 years after Cortina hosted a much smaller Games in 1956. Other nearby towns will also host events.

The 2026 Winter Games mark the debut of a new Olympic sport: Ski Mountaineering, known as Skimo. It’s basically regular skiing without the chairlift. Athletes start the race by climbing the mountain on their skis, including sections of cross-country skiing, then ski back down the un-groomed mountainside. The Olympic version will feature sprints, 90-minute races, and a mixed team relay.

Milan will also bring the return of NHL players for the first time since 2014, giving the Olympic Hockey tournament a huge boost. With another favorable European time zone, the LA games only 2 years after, and the (likely) continuing growth of streaming, look for NBC to once again bring you more Olympics coverage than ever before when Milan lights the torch on February 6, 2026.

Final Medal Table

No matter how you slice it, Team USA came out on top again. The United States had a great Games. They collected 126 total medals, 35 more than China, and tied the Chinese for the most Gold Medals with 40. That’s America’s biggest overall haul since 1984, the last time the Games were in LA. More than 40% of Team USA athletes earned a medal.
