Day 17: An incredible fortnight in Italy comes to a close

Well, we’ve done it. 17 days. 8 sports. 16 disciplines. 116 events. 333 medals. So far, 464 individual athletes from 30 countries have won a medal, including 125 multi-medalists and one 6-time Gold Norwegian GOAT. Today features the last five medal events of the games, including the the Men’s Ice Hockey Gold Medal Game between USA and Canada, arguably the biggest marquee event of the Games. The medals will also be awarded in one of the Winter’s Olympics signature events, 4-man Bobsled, and Germany looks likely to continue their dominance. There is also one last chance for controversial Chinese-American Skier Eileen Gu to win a Gold in Milan.

The XXV Winter Olympiad will officially come to an end with the Closing Ceremony. Held in the Verona Olympic Arena, an ancient Roman amphitheatre, the ceremony will feature Italian artists as well as American DJ Diplo (sure, why not). Athletes will again parade into the stadium, this time not as individual country delegations but as a single group. (This now regular part of Olympic Closing Ceremonies was actually the idea of an Australian teenager at the 1956 Melbourne Games.) As the Milan athletes say their farewells, the Winter Olympic flag will officially be handed off to the French Alps and the flame will be extinguished.
